While not explicitly an answer to the martyred souls’ earlier question of “How long?”, their cries for vindication are finally addressed when the Lamb opens the sixth seal. What we see is disturbing.

Highly Honored
One of the challenges of interpreting Revelation is in determining how literally to interpret John’s vision. In this scene did the Lord actually hear the voices of the faithful dead who had lost their lives in the present tribulation? Or are these souls merely a poetic, symbolic voice?

Unexpected Invitations
Heaven and earth rejoiced over the one who is worthy to take the scroll and preside over the breaking of its seals. However, when he proceeds to do so, disaster follows. This does not look like victory.
